State of the Beaches: Two Current Score Bands Across South Africa

State of the Beaches is Beach Day API’s weekly look at recently refreshed records, focused on what current data can support for the week ahead. This edition examines a defined set of 39 South African beach records dated October 5, 2026 and retrieved from the live API on October 5: 27 in Western Cape, seven in Eastern Cape, and five in KwaZulu-Natal.

One current set, two Beach Day Score bands

The most useful pattern in this week’s defined comparison set is not a leaderboard. All 39 recently refreshed records fall into just two Beach Day Score values: 19 records at 52 and 20 records at 55. That tight distribution is a good reminder for product teams: a score is a fast sorting signal, while the companion condition fields provide the context users need to understand a result.

The 52 and 55 records appear across the three represented provinces. The score alone therefore does not stand in for geography, local weather, or an operational recommendation. A beach finder, tourism page, or hospitality workflow can use the score to group and sort current records, then surface the record-level weather fields alongside it.

Four record-level examples

Kings BeachEastern CapeClear68.7°F12.2 mph55

Bikini Beach and Lappiesbaai show that nearby records can sit in different score bands while remaining close in air temperature and wind. Kings Beach and Pennington both carry a score of 55, yet their records show different temperature and wind values. This is a practical case for returning both the decision-ready score and the fields behind a product’s display, rather than presenting a single opaque status.

A useful pattern for product teams

For a travel, tourism, rental, or concierge product, this week’s records support a simple interface pattern: filter to current records, group by score band, and retain the weather values needed for a useful card or comparison view. It avoids turning a narrow score range into an exaggerated ranking while still giving users a fast way to scan a defined region.

Data notes

Observation window: October 4, 2026 at 00:00 Pacific through this October 5, 2026 edition. Retrieval date: October 5, 2026. Scope: 39 recently refreshed Beach Day API records in South Africa, not every beach worldwide. This report uses the current record date, Beach Day Score, and weather fields shown above. Weather is a conditions field, not an observed water-quality measurement. Water-quality fields, missing ocean values, and unknown risk fields were not used for ranking, safety claims, or recommendations.
